Gilbert Coutrin

Short vita

Gilbert Coutrin was born on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. He carried out his dance education in Paris as master student of Jazz legend Matt Mattox and with a.o. René Deshauteur, Jaqueline Fynneart, Walter Scherer, Miguel Lopez. In Paris he worked as dancer in several theatres and companies and later became artistic director of Blaise dance company. In the mid 80s he started his career as teacher and choreographer, first in Austria as freelance teacher and choreographer for TV-Shows und companies. At that time he also founded his own company Extrem's in Ljubljana/Slovenia which was successfully touring in Jugoslavia. In 1989 he arrived in Germany, followed by some teaching invitations from Hamburg und Frankfurt. Since 1990 Coutrin has been living and working in Berlin as freelance choreographer and teacher for Modern-Jazz and Jazz Dance. Having taught at numerous professional schools of dance, over the years he has formed generations of young dancers and teachers. Gilbert has been an internationally demanded workshop teacher as well; especially in Russia and Hungary he has hereby contributed a great deal to the local development of Modern-Jazz Dance. In 2005 he founded again a company of his own in Berlin, the Jazz-Art Dance Company, with which he created „Hommage à Chopin“ (WP: 2006, Berlin) and „En passant“ (WP: 2006, Eger/Ungarn).
